Bookmark Project 2010: Amulet
October 23 to 31, 2010
Guest Curator: Anisia Avram

Presented with the 34th Annual Toronto Jewish Book Fair
at Beth David B’nai Israel Beth Am Synagogue, 55 Yeomans Rd

For the ninth consecutive year, the Koffler Gallery presents The Bookmark Project, an intervention of artist-designed bookmarks concurrent with the annual Toronto Jewish Book Fair organized by the Koffler Centre of the Arts. Unique bookmarks and multiples created by practicing artists and visual art students will be inserted clandestinely into the thousands of books for sale at the 34th Annual Book Fair. The bookmarks will also be presented in an online exhibition at www.kofflerarts.org.

This year's theme, Amulet, considers the role of the bookmark as a talisman throughout the adventure of reading. The book, an intricate construction of text and ideas, is designed to capture and bring the reader into another world – a world through which only the bookmark can provide safe passage.

Like a labyrinth, a book is an elaborate structure that lures the reader inside. Its pages act as barriers that must be crossed before advancing to the next chapter. The text itself can reach mythical dimensions as the eye must navigate through each line and follow a path down the page. Equipped with the loyal bookmark, the heroic reader journeys through the text’s fortifications in an intense feat of discovery. The more one reads, the deeper one travels into the labyrinth, engulfed by the vertigo of narrative, losing track of the outside world.

The bookmark becomes a protective power, helping the reader find a way in and out of the book. Similar to the mythical thread of Ariadne that guided Theseus through the Minotaur’s labyrinthine lair, the bookmark acts as a course-plotting aid through the maze of words. It is the reader’s sidekick and amulet in a great book adventure.

Anisia Avram is a graduate student at York University, concurrently pursuing a Curatorial Studies in Visual Culture Diploma and an Arts and Media Administration Graduate Diploma. She also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from York University, with a dual specialization in Print Media and Photography. As the past Director/Curator of the Samuel J. Zacks Gallery, Avram has organized many student exhibitions at York University. She is also a founder and board member of the InPrint Collective in Toronto.

Submission Requirements
Bookmarks should be functional and not damage or scratch the books on display. Artists are requested to submit one original bookmark for the public intervention that will not be returned. Artists whose bookmarks are selected for this project will receive a nominal artist fee, the amount of which is dependent on the number of participating artists. Fees will be issued by mail within 30 days of the close of the project.
