Pages Books & Magazines, Wallflower Press, the Toronto International Film Festival Group, and NOW present a This Is Not A Reading Series double book launch: PROFESSOR JERRY WHITE celebrates the publication of THE CINEMA OF CANADA and OF THIS PLACE AND ELSEWHERE: THE FILMS AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF PETER METTLER. Set against the backdrop of Classic Canadian Cinema images, our distinguished panel--author and film scholar Jerry White, Wallflower Press publisher Yoram Allon, and programmer Steve Gravestock will engage in a lively discussion, moderated by Pages proprietor Marc Glassman, on documenting cinema in books and other formats. We cap off this high-caliber evening with a retrospective look at the work of Canadian filmmaking icon, Peter Mettler. Author Jerry White will share the stage with Mettler for a rare and intimate interview.

Both books will be on sale during the event.

THE CINEMA OF CANADA (Wallflower Press) contains 24 essays, each on a different film and divides itself into three distinct categories: English-Canadian cinema; Québec cinema; Aboriginal cinema. In so doing, it provides a fascinating historical account of the development of film and documentary traditions across the diverse national and regional communities in Canada. Among the many important films discussed are Le Déclin de l'empire américain (1988), I've Heard the Mermaids Singing (1988), Exotica (1994), Dead  Man (1995), Le Confessional (1995)  and Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001).

OF THIS PLACE AND ELSEWHERE: THE FILMS AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF PETER METTLER (Toronto International Film Festival Group) includes discussion of all of Mettler's major films, among them chapters devoted to Picture of Light and Gambling, Gods and LSD. It places Mettler in a Canadian context but also deals with his identity as a Swiss artist and his place in an emerging global cinema. The book also includes a selection of Mettler's photographic work.

JERRY WHITE is Assistant Professor of Film Studies at the University of Alberta, where he is also President of the Canadian Association for Irish Studies. He has published widely on Canadian cinema including, as co-editor, North of Everything: English-Canadian Cinema Since 1980 (2002).

PETER METTLER will be featured during the Toronto International Film Festival's Canadian Retrospective. One of Canada's most critically acclaimed filmmakers; Mettler was part of a circle of filmmakers that emerged as a vital force in Canadian cinema in the 1980s (which has come to be known as the Toronto New Wave). The list of directors he collaborated with as a cinematographer early on in his career constitutes a who's who of the Canadian film industry: Atom Egoyan (NEXT OF KIN, 1984; FAMILY VIEWING, 1987), Patricia Rozema (PASSION: A LETTER IN 16MM, 1985), Bruce McDonald (KNOCK! KNOCK!, 1985), and Jeremy Podeswa (DAVID ROCHE TALKS TO YOU ABOUT LOVE, 1983).

STEVE GRAVESTOCK is Associate Director, Canadian Programming, at the Toronto International Film Festival Group. He has written extensively on Canadian and international cinema for many publications. Among these credits are the Toronto Star, POV Magazine, and Now Magazine. He is also a current contributor to Cinemascope, and Festival Magazine, and author of Don Owen: Notes On A Filmmaker And His Culture.

YORAM ALLON is Commissioning Editor and Editorial Director at Wallflower Press, specialist publishers of cinema and the moving image; www.wallflowerpress.co.uk
