Improvisation
Edited by Ric Knowles

Improvisation in the twenty-first century may be a definitive characteristic of performance, that which constitutes its liveness, and the site at which the struggle between stultifying cultural reproduction and the libratory potential of flexible accommodation and deep listening plays itself out. When the one economic constant, ironically, is instability, when all aspects of our lives are driven by exponentially quickening technological change, and when education is increasingly under pressure to train people in skills and for jobs that by the time of their graduation are no longer needed, it is increasingly the case that the best performances, (human, corporate, or technological) are improvisational, which however mediated, mediatized, or prosthetic, are also adaptive, instantaneous, and therefore “live.” But what exactly is improvisation, and (when) is it a good thing?

This issue explores the divide between reproductive and productive improvisation—between the competitive individual improviser as the free-market entrepreneur of neoliberal ideology and purposeful group improvisation as healthy community formation and socially responsible intervention into the realm of the social.
