The Images Festival is seeking an Operations Manager and Programmer

The Images Festival, based in Toronto and now in its 24th year, features Canadian and international film and video and related new media, installations and live performances. This 10-day festival combines theatrical exhibitions with gallery-based media art installations and features symposia, artists’ retrospectives, special curated programs and publications alongside its annual competition selection of artist film and video. North America’s largest exhibitor of independent and experimental moving image culture is currently seeking an Operations Manager and Programmer.

Both positions will work in a collaborative environment to plan and execute a successful 2011 Festival involving multiple exhibition sites and events, and public, corporate and community partners. Images is a dynamic workplace and annual forum for excellence and innovation in the contemporary media arts.

Operations Manager responsibilities include Office Management, Development, Communications, Festival Logistics and Print Management, summarized as follows:
  • Assisting the Executive Director and Artistic Director by leading, writing, editing, proofing of government and foundation grants, along with the submission of reports and correspondence
  • Managing general office administration including: handling phones, email and walk-in inquiries, maintaining archives and files, maintenance and development of computer database (FileMaker Pro and web-based) assisting with banking, bookkeeping, office supplies and services/vendors;
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining a Giving and/or Membership Program;
  • Managing current and new community partners and co-presenters including event sponsors and contra relationships (ad space, hospitality, travel, etc.);
  • Management of venue/volunteer and box office manager and related interns;
  • Working with contracted design team, print production coordinator and advertising salesperson to manage critical path and ensure timely delivery of print and design materials;
  • Working, in conjunction with Executive and Artistic Directors to manage the development and implementation of community interest in special initiatives and / or focused projects;
  • Managing the distribution of all Images communications including web site, email list and correspondence;
  • Coordinating web site production, including design consultation, writing and copy editing as well as all data entry and database maintenance;
  • Managing festival logistics including supervising and overseeing box office, front-of-house and volunteer coordination, venue set-up and decor, providing information to the general community and responding to requests and inquiries about the festival;
  • Managing our volunteer program, including both year-round and festival volunteers and interns
 
Programmer responsibilities include selection of films, videos, installations, live performance and new media projects, writing curatorial/programming text, coordinating gallery exhibitions with external partners and festival logistics, summarized as follows:
  • Programming, in collaboration with the AD and Executive Director of film/video screenings, live performances, installation works and related events with presentation partners for the 2011 Images Festival;
  • Writing curatorial statements, program descriptions and descriptions of individual works and assembling images, artist biographies and logos for festival catalogue production;
  • Soliciting single channel film and video work from local, Canadian and international distributors, artists/directors/producers;
  • Maintaining communication with participating artists, exhibition venues, and community partners: including arranging film rentals and negotiating fees with exhibiting artists and/or distributors, developing exhibition contracts, coordinating details for exhibition openings, receptions, parties and talks, gathering written information and photos as well as technical and logistical installation requirements and costs;
  • Providing research assistance to the Artistic Director;
  • Supervising Programming Intern/s;
  • Ensuring submission information is entered into Images Festival database;
  • Organizing and managing student screening jury;
  • Working with the AD to manage print traffic: including booking films, videos, etc. from distributors and arranging shipping and brokerage prior to, during, and post-festival;
  • Working collaboratively to develop and execute a publicity, promotional and community/education outreach strategy for programmed works: includes servicing media requests for materials and information and maintaining and adding to the Images Festival outreach database and making outreach presentations to schools and community groups;
  • Managing all details of installing and de-installing installation works: includes equipment rental, transportation and installation, materials purchase and construction and coordination of volunteers;
  • Assisting the ED with Programming information for applications for funding;
  • Preparing/overseeing detailed festival statistics in preparation for an annual final report;
  • Arranging hospitality, travel, accommodation, and support for guests of the Images Festival;
  • Working with the AD to host guests during the festival: including facilitating connections between Canadian and international guest artists, exhibitors and curators;
  • Informing artists of the results of selection committees.
