CHIEF PREPARATOR
Museum London
Museum London seeks an experienced Preparator.
The Chief Preparator coordinates the labour and materials for the installation and takedown of exhibitions and works with staff to ensure the safe keeping of all exhibition related materials and the collection. On all matters, the position works closely with the Head of Exhibitions and Collections and the Museum’s curatorial staff.
Reporting to the Executive Director or designate, the successful applicant will coordinate all preparation activities and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the preparation shop including the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment, shop, and preparation storage areas, and be responsible for stocking and ordering of preparation materials.
Working with the curators and registrars, this position plans for exhibition installation, consults on technical aspects of installation, permanent collection storage and the packing of art and artifacts.
The position also offers assistance to other departments as required.
WORK PERFORMED
QUALIFICATIONS:
The incumbent must possess a minimum of two years museum preparation experience, including a sound knowledge of the principles and practices of museum management, conservation and lighting standards and an ability to meet deadlines. Post-secondary school education or training in a related field is an asset.
The incumbent must have the ability to work independently and collaboratively and should have excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills and have the ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with artists, visiting curators and co-workers. The Chief Preparator must be able to successfully motivate and supervise casual staff, helping to engender a strong sense of team spirit. The incumbent must be able to multi-task, establish priorities, perform under pressure and have an attention to detail. Experience using MS Office Suite applications is an asset.
The successful applicant is required to know and comply with Museum London policies and procedures and the safety rules and laws prescribed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations of Ontario as outlined in Section 28 (1) and (2) of the Act.
The successful applicant must be willing to work overtime as required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The incumbent must have excellent art handling skills and a thorough knowledge of art and artifact handling, exhibition installation, carpentry, crate construction, metalwork, plastic forming, matting and framing techniques. The successful candidate must also have a knowledge of electronics, audio-visual and computer-driven exhibition applications, exhibition lighting and its application and will possess a valid driver’s license and be licensed to operate a fork lift and skyjack.
JOB FEATURES:
This position is part of the CUPE bargaining unit. It is a thirty-five hour workweek from Monday to Friday. Benefits are outlined in the Collective Agreement.

WORK PERFORMED
- Follows exhibition specifications developed with curatorial staff. Prepares, installs and removes artwork, artifacts and installation materials for exhibitions and other events.
- Prepares the exhibition spaces by moving temporary walls, repairing exhibition walls by patching and painting.
- Orders and maintains departmental supplies and equipment and maintains the orderly condition of the preparation shop and preparation storage areas.
- Loads/ unloads, picks up/delivers, packs/unpacks art/artifacts/institution materials for storage, exhibition and/or shipment.
- Constructs crates and other shipping containers. Builds display props (such as vitrines, risers, pedestals etc.) when required.
- Cleans and maintains all permanent and temporary exhibitions, including audio-visual components.
- Keeps in excellent working condition the electronic, audio-visual and computer-driven components of all exhibitions.
- Keeps in excellent working condition the lighting systems in all exhibition areas.
- In consultation with the curatorial staff, schedules casual preparation staff when required.
- Transports art and artifacts when required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
