Harbourfront Centre is an innovative non-profit cultural organization responsible for 10 acres of Toronto’s central waterfront.  Working in partnership with various communities, Harbourfront Centre nurtures and supports educational and recreational activity as well as contemporary artistic creation through showcasing Canadian and international talent.  As one of Canada’s largest centres for contemporary culture, the centre presents some 4000 internationally acclaimed events ranging from music, literary and theatrical festivals to children’s activities and all aspects of the visual arts.  Harbourfront Centre is one of Toronto's most popular tourist attractions, drawing more than 12 million visitors and contributing over $126 million to the local economy annually.

Currently an employment opportunity exists for a Director, Development.  Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this position will direct the private sector fundraising strategy and government programme funding for Harbourfront Centre including corporate sponsorship, charitable donations, foundation support, individual donors and government programme grants.  Working closely with the CEO and Board committees, this position will devise annual and long term strategies, implement and achieve annual fundraising goals and play a key role in the senior management team of Harbourfront Centre.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Develop and implement private sector fundraising strategies and plans.
  • Research and identify potential funders, initiate meetings, prepare and conduct sales presentations, and solidify partnership arrangements including closing deals and reporting.
  • Ensure all marketing and publicity plans and various contracts support sponsor requirements as outlined in their contracts
  • Manage and direct a team of eight full time staff.
  • Establish and nurture positive relationships with corporate partners, government departments and agencies, foundations and potential individual donors to ensure ongoing communication and support of Harbourfront Centre.
  • Devise and implement the annual and long term strategy for government programme support of Harbourfront Centre including research, preparation of grant applications and reporting.
  • Fiscal management of the department including budgeting and forecasting.


The ideal candidate will be a post secondary graduate of an Arts Administration, Sponsorship & Fundraising programme or related discipline with 10 years experience in the not-for-profit sector.  Extensive experience in sponsorship sales, service and marketing in the private sector as well as experience with government and foundation granting procedures, individual giving and membership campaigns is a must.  He/she must be a strategic and creative thinker in order to design appropriate funding programmes and possess a strong ability to persuade, sell and negotiate in a tactful and diplomatic manner.  The successful candidate will have excellent communication and presentation skills, as well as writing skills for developing promotional material.  He/she will have exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to develop partnerships and motivate and develop subordinate staff.
