Job description:
 
The Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House (University of Toronto) is seeking a Curatorial Assistant from May 17 to September 3, 2010, to assist in the research, organization and coordination of a major, national and multi-partnered exhibition, conference, publication and outreach program on the history of ‘conceptual art’ in Canada and internationally from the mid 1960s to the 1980s.  The exhibition is to take account of national developments and it will lead to the opportunity for Canadians to experience this history through the exhibition, conference, outreach programs and catalogue.
 
The idea candidate for the position of Curatorial Assistant will have a demonstrated background and knowledge – through university education and volunteer work or previous employment – in the area of the history of contemporary Canadian art, with a special emphasis in international movements from the 1960s onward.
 
Successful candidates must be enrolled in a university program in art history with the intension of returning to full-time studies in the fall.  Preference may be given to Masters of PhD students.
 
The candidate will bring excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as abilities to work independently and in a team, with an emphasis on critical thinking, a great sense for detail and information accuracy, and enthusiasm for contemporary Canadian art and history.  The candidate will have proven experience with detailed historical research and is able to process information in a variety of formats, firm scanning, copying, recording, and entering values into databases, spreadsheets, word documents, and pdf forms.  Project and event planning experience us a definite asset as is prior administrative experience in a public or private gallery context.
