Lina Faroussi

May 31, 2017

Lina Faroussi was born and raised in Syria. She grew up surrounded by political turmoil, witnessed the imprisonment of her father, and deeply felt the impact of watching her homeland torn apart by the recent war. Her passion for art started at an early stage. During her years living in Egypt and then Dubai, she pursued her dream of becoming a visual artist. She moved to Toronto in 2008 and continues to exhibit in many different group and solo shows throughout the Middle East, Europe, Canada, and the United States. In 2015, she received the Sandro Botticelli Prize at the Palermo Biennale and International Art Exhibition of Florence. She works in acrylic combined with a variety of media, including fabric, Japanese paper, clay, sand, wires, and photo transfer. Her paintings are currently on display in the group exhibition Life Disrupted at Gallery 1313 in Toronto until June 4.

1. Soul searching...

…and the continuous pursuit to realize my own distinctive vision and discover the role model artist who will influence my work in one way or another. I’ve always been asked: Who is your role model in art? To be honest I still do not really know the answer. During my journey, I may have admired some artwork by one artist or another, but only during a particular period of their life. Other times, I was fascinated with an artist’s personality but not their artwork. I don’t know if I will ever find my role model or aspiration artist. Maybe I don’t have one, but it’s a question that always made me wonder and has given me motivation to continue my search deeper within to discover myself.

2. Family ties & friends

I’m very blessed with my family. I have two amazing boys who make me proud every day, my sweet precious grandson who brightens my day with his smile, and my husband who supports me in every way. Then I have my mother, my siblings with whom I share my daily burdens and joy, and my friends who’ve always been by my side. They have my full commitment and love, and I promised myself to always be there for them. They come first no matter what. In a time when everything is digitized and fast, where real connections and relations are rare, I make an effort to stay connected and not to lose touch with what matters most in my life.

3. Film & TV series

I am fascinated by movie productions and TV shows, and the artistry behind the production of each movie, TV series, and show. The new ideas and story lines, the way they can provoke my imagination and emotions, take me to different worlds, and introduce me to different characters. Film festivals are a must-watch for me. I create my lists of movies/films and I make it a mission to watch all of them. And when it comes to easy fun TV shows, I have my picks and favorites, and they sometimes become a daily routine for me.

4. Different cultures

I have a passion for learning about other cultures. Whenever I get a chance, I travel to a new place, meet different people, try new foods, or venture in a new experience somewhere different. And I’ve been so lucky to be able to travel as much as I have. When I met my husband, he was totally from a different culture than mine, but I found that enriching, and we both learn from each other all the time. To me, to be exposed to different cultures broadens my visions; it adds a level of growth to my personality and teaches me acceptance of others – something that is unfortunately lacking in this day and age.

5. Decoration

One of things I enjoy the most is decorating and finding ways to add beauty or an artistic touch to any room. I like my space to feel warm and cozy, where I can find comfort and beauty. I enjoy mixing between antique and contemporary pieces – my Syrian heritage intertwined with my present.
