Kym Greeley
Artist

St. John's
February 24, 2009

Kym Greeley recently participated in a four month long residency at The Rooms in St. John’s which led to her current solo exhibition entitled Time Trial. Born in Newfoundland in 1973, she received an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from NSCAD in 1997 and studied at the Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Art and Science in New York in 1996. Her recent production has focused primarily on painting and screen-printing, and she has presented this work in exhibitions in both artist-run and commercial galleries in Canada including solo exhibitions in 2008 at the Resource Centre for the Arts Gallery and Eastern Edge Gallery in St John’s. The Canadian visual arts journal MIX Magazine profiled her work in 2006. Her work is included in the Newfoundland Provincial Art Bank Collection and The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. She is currently represented by Christina Parker Gallery in St John’s.

1. Espresso

One of life’s little treasures. I love cappuccinos so much, I’d probably give up everything for them. They can make bad turn good, sadness turn to happiness, and tiredness to restlessness. I’m not sure I could ask for much more than that.

2. Painting

I love painting. My obsession started at NSCAD in the 90s and I haven’t been able to shake it since. I believe it was reading about all those big NYC abstract painters that got me hooked or maybe it was the Pop artists. Now that I think about it, it was my first trip to NYC when I saw all that shit for real. It was so exciting.

3. Screen-Printing

Well it’s like this: make an image, shoot a screen, and print it as many times as you want in as many colors as you want. What’s better than that?

4. Picking

Doesn’t matter what it is, I love picking it. Blueberries, partridgeberries, blackberries, but most of all, my favourite thing to pick is mushrooms. Last summer, Scott Rogers came to Newfoundland. I brought him to my secret chanterelle mushrooms spot. We picked ‘em, fried ‘em up, and made the tastiest mushroom egg sandwiches ever!

5. Tobacco

This band (and their CD Fucked Up Friends) is my latest obsession. It's powered by synths, hip-hop beats and vocoders.
