Craft Practical Symposium
Saturday, September 11, 2010
Presented by the Ontario Crafts Council and the Tom Thomson Art Gallery
Craft Practical is a one-day workshop series offering artists and craftspeople the opportunity to explore, interact, inform and be informed in regards to the contemporary craft world. Topics range from the practical to the conceptual. Particpants will have the opportunity to ask questions, interact and connect with the presenters and their creative peers on a myriad of topics.
This event provides an important opportunity to think about “craft” from fresh perspectives and with one’s eyes – and mind – wide open. The diversity of participants will encourage and develop a forum for new dialogue that addresses “craft” within contemporary practice and thought rather than framing it within the constructs of generations past.
To register, find schedule information, or to download the full brochure, please visit www.craft.on.ca/Programs/Symposium , or contact Mary Calarco at 519-841-6481 or mcalarco@craft.on.ca .

G8 and G20 Summit Craft now available at The Guild Shop
Until Friday, July 23
The Guild Shop
118 Cumberland Street (Yorkville)
The Guild Shop is pleased to offer the public an opportunity to own craft objects used to adorn the meeting rooms, leaders’ offices, and corridors of the 2010 Muskoka G8 and the Toronto G20 Summits.
Interior Designer Bruce Forster, hired to “develop a fine-art strategy”, approached the OCC to curate the craft component of the Canadian Collection at both Summits. Working in partnership with leading galleries across the province, along with incorporating works returning from the international exhibition Unity & Diversity, which was displayed as part of Canada’s guest country appearance at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale, South Korea, the OCC selected approximately 150 pieces to grace the two summit locations.
For a list of craftspeople and galleries who contributed to the Canadian Collection at the 2010 Muskoka G8 Summit and the Toronto G20 Summit, visit www.craft.on.ca/OCC_News/GG .
The Guild Shop is located at 118 Cumberland Street in Yorkville. Store hours are Monday to Wednesday and Saturday, 10am - 6pm; Thursday and Friday 10 am - 7pm; Sunday 12pm - 5pm.

Culture Days
September 24 – 26
Ontario Crafts Council Gallery
990 Queen Street W., Toronto
Join us during Culture Days for the exhibition Expat Report: Five Artists Discuss Life Trajectories. Curated by Megan Lafrenière and Lisa Pai, directors of the Lafrenière & Pai Gallery, the exhibtion explores the effect of uprootedness or transplantation on five artists and their artistic practices.
Pattie Chalmers, (Assistant Ceramics Professor at South Carbondale University in Illinois; MFA University of Minnesota), creates visual narratives by placing the figure in mixed historical modes. Laura Kukkee, (Assistant Professor of Art and Head of the Ceramic Department at Northwest Missouri State University; MFA Kent State U), transforms pattern into volumetric form. Anna Lindsay MacDonald, (MFA The Art Institute of Chicago; Jewellery Instructor at NSCAD), investigates wearable sign systems, referencing case studies of mental disorders. Sarah Troper, (Professor of Jewellery at George Brown College; MFA SUNY at New Paltz, NY), employs existing relationships to the everyday to highlight and examine the politics and mythologies of our times. Rachael Wong, (MFA, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University at Alfred, NY; current studio in Toronto), tracks lines of communication and non-communication through brightly coloured glass configurations. As expats or repats, these artists have much to tell us about craft, education, and their home and host countries, and how these factors inform their work.
