Present:
Carte Blanche | Vol. 2: Painting
November 15 - December 28, 2008
The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is pleased to present the exhibition Carte Blanche | Vol. 2: Painting, one of the most comprehensive surveys of contemporary Canadian painting undertaken in recent years. Beginning November 15 and continuing through December 28, 2008, the exhibition is organized to celebrate the Magenta Foundation's comprehensive publication Carte Blanche: volume 2.
The impressive scope of the volume follows Carte Blanche: volume 1, which has been widely recognized as one of the most significant books ever published on Canadian photography. Following the format of the book, Carte Blanche: volume 2, the exhibition has been organized into three categories - emerging, mid-career and established - and curators Clint Roenisch and David Liss have selected 10 artists from each category, from the 192 painters included in the book.
Viewers of the exhibition will be sure to recognize some of this country's most important living painters and will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the next generation of rising young artists. As is evident from the exhibition and publication, the current state of painting in Canada is buoyant and rich with innovation and supported by strong personal visions and internationally engaged discourse. Reflective of the pluralistic, post-modern era, there is an explosive diversity and plethora of approaches to painting that repudiates any notions of doubt towards the vitality of the medium and its unique relationship to the human experience, now extending into the 21st Century.

The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is pleased to present Art Metropole: The Top 100, taking place in our Project Room from November 15 through December 28, 2008.
This documentary-style exhibition situates the Art Metropole Collection historically, tracing its beginnings as a loosely-based agency of Toronto-based artists in the early 1970s, as it evolved into a unique artist-run centre, Art Metropole, collecting and distributing alternative artworks that by-passed the traditional art gallery system. The Top 100 features an impressive collection of artists - with Toronto's General Idea front and centre - that represent the multiple histories and narratives of an extremely active period of national and international art production, from the 70s and 80s through to 1996. The exhibition includes art and artifacts by David Askevold, John Baldessari, Stan Douglas, Marcel Duchamp, Dan Graham, Guerrilla Girls, Agnes Martin, Yoko Ono, Michael Snow, Derek Sullivan and Lawrence Weiner, to name a few.
The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art presents Art Metropole: The Top 100 within the historical context and spirit of evolution of Toronto's downtown, Queen St. West-oriented, hotbed of cultural activity, shifting west as it has to currently include the neighbourhood surrounding MOCCA. The so-called West Queen West Art + Design District of today is one of the most artistically active neighbourhoods in Canada and it is important to note the activities and histories that are the foundations of the burgeoning contemporary scene. Art Metropole has and continues to be an integral contributor to this ferment of Canadian cultural production.
Art Metropole: The Top 100 was curated by Kitty Scott, former Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada, with Jonathan Shaughnessy, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, and is a travelling exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Canada. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication, English and French versions, available at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art.
Please join us in honouring and celebrating the great cultural achievements of Canada's artists at a reception on Saturday November 15, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, 952 Queen Street West, Toronto.
All MOCCA programs and activities are supported by Toronto Culture, the Ontario Arts Council, BMO Financial Group, individual memberships and private donations.
