Mentoring Artists for Women's Art encourages and supports the intellectual and creative development of women in the visual arts by providing an ongoing forum for education and critical dialogue.
MAWA’s principle activity is one-on-one mentorship. This skills sharing passes on generational knowledge and helps prevent each woman artist from having to “re-invent the wheel”. It also builds a sharing, respectful community. Based in Winnipeg, our mentorships range in length from one week to eighteen months, and focus on specific media, topics, and communities. Other educational opportunities that MAWA provides include workshops, lectures, residencies in our downtown apartment, artist talks, critical reading groups, a monthly Stitch ’n Bitch group, and occasional symposia. We believe that critical dialogue is also essential for artists and the community, so we commission critical writing.
