Reference Points is a screening of short video works by contemporary artists exploring themes of nomadism, migration and displacement, curated by Strange Strangers.

Strange Strangers is delighted to present a screening of short video works by 13 local and international artists: Michele Ayoub, Anitra Hamilton, Risa Horowitz, Benny Hunter, Dorica Manuel, Jihee Min, Ash Moniz, Theo Pelmus, Catherine Polcz, Mary Porter, Colin Rosati and Maryna Makarenko, and Tatiana Stadnichenko.

Contemporary life is uncertain and constantly changing, especially in a large, diverse city like Toronto. In order to survive, and perhaps through a search for fulfillment, some move on. We may move many times over, drawn by life circumstances, educational opportunities, research or political reasons. Our days are filled with information and shaped by technologies that have made it easier for some to pick up and move on to the next place. What do you keep as reference points when there is no home, no familiar cultural context, no common background or conventions?

Video art reflects the fluidity and mobility of contemporary life. This malleable medium allows for the exploration of ephemeral nomadic impulses, from the need to experience a new physical place, to re-imagining of and re-connecting with current circumstances. The event features works of five minutes or less, followed by an informal discussion and reception.

This event has been made possible by the generous support of strangers, friends and video art enthusiasts of the Toronto arts community. We would like to extend a special thanks to YYZ Artists’ Outlet for their partnership and hosting of this screening. Reference Points is entirely funded by crowdfunding and in-kind donations.

YYZ Artists’ Outlet was founded in 1979 by a group of young artists, YYZ is a site of contemporary cultural conversation, providing artists space, support and resources to take risks and create freely.
