A Connective Platform for Artists and Collaborators Across the Global Contemporary Art Community

Foundwork is a new connective platform for artists to introduce their work to curators, gallerists, and other collaborators wherever they’re based. Foundwork is a resource for artists and collaborators, not a marketplace, and is designed as a professional tool for artists and exhibitors alike. Our founder is a former New York gallerist and our advisory board and network include curators, gallerists, art fair directors, professors, and artists.

Introducing the Foundwork Guest Curators Program

Guest Curators is a new program where dynamic practitioners are invited to spotlight artists they discover on Foundwork. Guests may include curators, gallerists, artists, academics, and anyone else doing exciting work in or around the field of contemporary art. Guests to date have included Francesca Gavin, Helen Toomer, Manuela Paz, Tod Lippy, and Manon Slome, among others. Upcoming guests in the new year include Tiana Webb Evans, Neil Goldberg, and Spring/Break Art Show co-founders Ambre Kelley and Andre Gori, with new guests participating each month.

Foundwork Artist Search Page

How It Works

Artists create and manage their own profiles using a simple content management system (CMS) built into Foundwork, and can share unlimited works, their CV, and an artist statement if they wish. Collaborators can effectively research artists and artwork on Foundwork across a range of key criteria including artist location, affiliations (such as art schools), degree type, class year, artwork formats, and descriptive attributes which artists assign themselves, informing their context on the site. There are no prices or sales on Foundwork as it’s designed to be a professional resource for artists and exhibitors together.

How to Join as an Artist

Foundwork is available to all artists that wish to participate, including self-taught artists and alumni and students from graduate and undergraduate studio art programs worldwide. Foundwork is free for art students, and all other artists can create profiles for a $4 monthly subscription which includes a full artist profile on Foundwork, use of our CMS, and the ability to upload and publish unlimited works. There is normally a 30 day free trial for new artist members, but you can sign up before December 31, 2018 and enter the Member Code AKIMBOONFOUNDWORK (all caps) to receive an additional 90 days free on the platform.

Our People

Foundwork is run by Adam Yokell, formerly the Director of Hometown Gallery in Brooklyn where he worked with artists from the US and abroad. The idea for Foundwork came from that experience and wanting another way to research artists beyond the local scene—and at the same time, seeing the limitations that artists often face trying to introduce their work to new collaborators. Adam is also a lawyer in the art community and is a member of the Art Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association, where he serves on the subcommittee on Artists’ Rights. Foundwork is dedicated to community engagement and is proud to have as its advisors Helen Toomer, Becca Hoffman, Manuela Paz, Tod Lippy, and DeWitt Godfrey, all of whom collaborate with artists in various contexts across the field.
