Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, is launching the first low-residency MFA in Atlantic Canada

November 20th, 2018 application deadline for the May 2019 cohort

Our campus is located in Corner Brook, on Elmastukwek/Bay of Islands, in traditional Mi’kmaw territory. The largest city in the region, Corner Brook is a service centre for Western and Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. The campus is a short drive to Ktaqmkuk Mi’kmaw Museum, the first and only Mi’kmaw museum in the province. Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, is nearby. This extraordinary environment offers graduate students an ideal space for research, scholarship, and creative activity combined with community engagement and critical discourse.

The Grenfell MFA delivers a blended learning-low residency program that can be completed in five or six semesters over a two year period of study. The program begins with an on-campus intensive during May and June of the spring semester followed by fall and winter terms completed in the student’s home community or at another campus of Memorial University with distance learning supervision and contact. Students return to Grenfell Campus for a second on-campus intensive the following spring. The final project is presented at Grenfell Campus during the second fall or winter term.

Guided by our active faculty and Memorial University’s progressive model for distance and blended learning, we provide a flexible course of study tailored to the student’s individual area of research, incorporating both critical theory and practice-based research. Students have access to studios, research facilities, and faculty across a range of disciplines within the Visual Arts program and beyond through the broad Memorial University network. There are further residency opportunities through Memorial’s other campuses and locations in St John’s, Norris Point, Labrador, and Harlow UK.

Our program will be shaped by graduate students who seek a flexible delivery model and wish to engage in graduate research at more than one location: in their home and/or at a number of Memorial University Campuses or locations. We look forward to hearing from you!
