FREESTYLE
LAL, Jessica Thompson and Grace N’ Style

Curator: Suzanne Carte-Blanchenot, Outreach Programmer

Thursday July 3, 7:30pm – 9:30pm.
Civic Square Stage, Mississauga
Admission: Free

Debuting their new cd Deportation Lal will be performing on the outdoor stage at Mississauga’s Civic Square. Toronto collective Lal’s sound from the outset was one of contrasts: icy, futuristic rhythms melting into soothing soul melodies — an increasingly multicultural blend of down-tempo soul, meaty bass lines and dynamic, cross-continental rhythms. Hints of South Asian roots and hip hop formation season their productions with a taste of tradition, while the overall sound suggests something far more progressive.

Their music has always served as a sound-bed for singer Rosina Kazi’s social concerns and the many causes surrounding them. What stands out even more from Lal’s decade-long history is the trio’s tireless generosity to the development of a community ideal sparking growth and awareness.

The project's creativity extends into a new media show with new media incorporating video images into and interactive stage set-up that pushes the audience to engage of the deep social messages that ripple through every song.

Opening the event Mississauga’a Grace N’ Style Urban Hip Hop dance crew will be performing new work wearing Freestyle SoundKits that generate electronic beats as their bodies move.

Jessica Thompson is a new media artist living in Buffalo, NY whose practice encompasses sound, performance, and mobile technologies. When the soundkits are engaged, each step the dancer takes broadcast as a single sound. The piece enables users to create performative spaces activated through collaboration and improvisation.

Free shuttle bus departs from the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street W, Toronto) at 7:00 pm to the Art Gallery of Mississauga returning by 9:30 pm
