ONE ON ONE Gallery and the Visual Communications Program at Medicine Hat College present:

Lorène Bourgeois
Large Drawings - Gathering
Grands dessins - Rencontres

March 2 - March 27, 2018
Opening reception: Thursday, March 2, 4:30 pm

ONE ON ONE Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Lorène Bourgeois entitled Large Drawings - Gathering. The exhibition comprises a series of the artist's large-scale representations of humans, animals, clothing and nakedness—pinned directly to the walls of the gallery.

"As an artist, many of my sources are from public archives and museums, but also from my contact with the world around me—from places as diverse as a swimming pool, an agricultural fair, a war museum, or a pet cemetery. My way of working is to compare the world as I find it, with the particular histories and cultural influences that have shaped me on this continent, and in France, where I grew up.

My installation will explore relationships between clothing and nakedness, and bring together unexpected subjects: what is the link between two bathers, a helmeted man, a wrapped infant, sleeping pigs, and children wearing gas masks?

I do not wish to construct works that are literal, but to express something of the awe and the anxiety that I feel in a world that is increasingly chaotic and uncertain.

I wish to create works that reflect not only the unique physicality of my subjects (human or animal,) but also their dignity and the singular gravity they seem to project.”

The exhibition will include 20 highly-detailed drawings mounted directly on the wall. The artist will be present at the opening and everyone is welcome.

Born in France, Lorène Bourgeois studied in Paris, Philadelphia and Halifax. A Fulbright recipient, she holds an MFA from NSCAD University.
