Executive Director
Full-time position

Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a charitable, non-profit, artist-run centre committed to supporting multi-faceted approaches to photography and lens-based media. Founded in 1979 to establish a supportive environment for the development of artistic practice, Gallery 44’s mandate is to provide a context for meaningful reflection and dialogue on contemporary photography.

The Executive Director is responsible for strategic leadership and the overall management of Gallery 44’s programs, staffing and resources. Gallery 44’s three main program areas – exhibitions, education and production facilities – are driven by an open framework where staff and committee members work together to develop and implement meaningful encounters between art and the public. As an artist-run centre, the Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and together they work to implement the missions and artistic mandate of the organization. The Executive Director builds community engagement and public support for Gallery 44’s programming with the goal of sustaining a robust visitorship, donor base, and reputation for excellence.

Major Responsibilities Include:

  • Overseeing the development and implementation of all existing and new programs relating to exhibitions, education and the facilities with the collaboration of gallery staff and Gallery 44 members
  • Ensuring that Gallery 44’s many programs reflect its mission and vision
  • Overseeing the development of Gallery 44’s strategic plan and ensuring benchmarks are being met
  • Seeking partnerships and opportunities in order to increase resources and impact and to strengthen equitable engagement
  • Taking primary responsibility for all areas of development and fundraising, including grant writing and reporting, seeking public and private support, fostering and maintaining donor relations and developing opportunities to produce self-generated income
  • Taking primary responsibility for all areas of financial planning, including overseeing bookkeeping, budgeting and resource management
  • Managing and providing leadership and support to staff, including taking primary responsibility for hiring, managing, and evaluating staff
  • Acting as a primary spokesperson for Gallery 44, including in regards to media relations and liaising with politicians and professional associations, as needed

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a relevant position or field
  • Strong knowledge of contemporary art
  • Strong knowledge of photographic practices, modes of production and equipment
  • Experience in not-for-profit sector
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Task oriented with strong skills in management, strategic thinking, and project supervision
  • Experience/proven ability in successful grant writing (project and operating grants)
  • Proven ability to organize, initiate and advance fundraising events and donor strategies
  • Experience in financial management including budgeting, reporting and cost control
  • Ability to work collectively and independently
  • Competent use of word processing and spreadsheet and database software
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Discretion and capacity to maintain confidentiality
  • Proven ability to engage diverse stakeholders
  • Artistic or curatorial practice
  • Second language, preferably French is an asset

Details: Salary range is $45,000-50,000 including benefits after probationary period and annual salary review. This position is a one-year contract, with an option to make permanent, and carries an expected start date late March 2018. The job entails working 35 hours per week with additional evenings and weekends. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.
