Linda Martinello, Matera VI, oil and graphite on drafting film, 2017

Città Rinata
Linda Martinello

January 13 to February 24, 2018
Opening Reception, Saturday, January 13, 1 pm – 3 pm
Artist will be present. Everyone is welcome.

Linda Martinello’s drawings and paintings on drafting film explore the landscape through personal memory and research of historical and culturally significant sites. Growing up in the suburbs of Toronto without family relatives and with limited exposure to her Mexican-Italian heritage, Martinello developed a fascination for cultural history, folklore and mythology. She combines oil painting with graphite drawing to create exquisite abstracted images, responding to her recollections and research of the places she travels.

For her exhibition at The Latcham Gallery, Città Rinata, which translates to “city reborn” or “rebirth of a city”, Martinello reflects on her time spent in the ancient cave town of Matera in Southern Italy and investigates the rich and complex history of one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. She translates her experience of the region’s unique geography, layering colour and composition to activate the image and capture the sensation of discovery.

This exhibition is part of The Latcham Gallery’s Next exhibition series that features an emerging artist pushing the boundaries of their contemporary art practice.

Linda Martinello is a Toronto-based artist with an MFA from the University of Waterloo. She is an Instructor in the Faculty of Art at OCAD University and is currently represented by Nicholas Metivier Gallery in Toronto. Martinello has exhibited as a solo artist in Toronto, Waterloo and Halifax, and was recently featured at the 2017 Art Toronto and Pulse Miami International Art Fairs.
