Just in time for the holiday season! The winter education session at Open Studio is now open and it’s the perfect gift for the creative person in your life. Gift certificates are also available. Additionally, we’re offering a 15% discount on all custom printing and private instruction jobs if you book by December 22nd, 2017. Booked projects must be completed by May 15th, 2018. Our courses provide a unique opportunity to work with professional printmaking artists, and are specifically designed for adults with no previous experience. Limited class sizes allow for individual needs and development. The full list of courses can be accessed here.


8-WEEK COURSES

Etching – $400 incl. materials
Monday Evenings, 6:30pm – 9:30pm
January 29 – March 26 (No class February 19)

Participants will work with metal plates and acid to create a range of images, textures and lines. The aquatint etching process, which produces a range of flat tones, will also be explored.

Lithography – $400 incl. materials

Participants will learn to draw and paint onto the surface of a finely ground limestone, which is then processed for printing.

Screenprinting – $400 incl. materials

Participants will use direct stencil methods to transfer ink onto paper. This course is suitable for photo-based, hand drawn or computer manipulated imagery.


WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

Letterpress Printing – $225 incl. materials

Participants will use a Vandercook press to explore letterpress block printing using linocuts, hand set type, dingbats and pre-exposed photopolymer plates.

Collagraph – $255 incl. materials
Saturdays, 11:00am – 4:00pm
March 3 and March 10

Participants will learn about collagraph plate making—originating from collage—by experimenting with non-traditional materials to create colourful and textured multiples.

Woodcut – $225 incl. materials
Saturday – Sunday, 11:00am – 4:00pm

Participants will explore different linoleum block cutting, inking and printing techniques using oil-based inks to create images of two or more colours.

Photo Etching – $330 incl. materials
Saturdays, 10:00am – 4:00pm

Participants will use photopolymer film to transform photographs, digital imagery or drawings into etchings.

Woodcut T-Shirt Printing – $225 incl. materials
Saturday – Sunday, 11:00am – 4:00pm

Participants will learn the basics of printing t-shirts using woodcuts.


4-WEEK COURSES

CMYK Screenprinting – $250 incl. materials

Participants will use four-colour process printing to convert photographic images into full-colour screenprints.

Advanced Etching – $310 incl. materials
Monday Evenings, 6:30pm – 9:30pm

Designed as an extension of the 8-week etching course, this course will allow participants to further explore varied techniques for developing texture in etching and refining the printing process.
*Participants must have previously completed an Open Studio 8-week etching course, Open Session in etching or received approval by the Technical Director.

OTHER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Open Sessions – $140 per session, materials not incl.
Wednesday Evenings, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (4 weeks)
Session 1: January 17 – February 7
Session 2: February 21 – March 14
Session 3: March 28 – April 18

The Open Session program allows participants who have printmaking experience to work independently with minimal supervision. The program is especially useful to students who want to transition from classes to renting at Open Studio. Open Studio’s Technical Director must approve registration. Studio Tours and Demos
Open Studio offers a range of tours and demonstrations for post-secondary students, adult groups and corporate groups. Tours and demos are great opportunities for team building, social groups and extended learning. Tours are offered Tuesday to Friday, during the hours of 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a minimum of two-week advance booking. Please call Open Studio at 416-504-8238 for more information.
