Waddington’s Fall 2017 Auction of Asian Art will be held Monday, December 4, 2017 at Waddington’s in Toronto. This exceptional collection includes 178 lots of works from across Asia, including: woodblock prints, sculpture, ivory carvings, porcelain and works on paper from Japan; Chinese paintings, scrolls, porcelain, decorative works, snuff bottles; as well as works from India.

Featured in the auction is a blue and white ‘Bajixiang’ vase, Qianlong mark, late Qing/Republic period or earlier. Well and heavily potted, the globular body rising steeply to broad shoulders, and tapering gradually to a wide neck and a gently everted rim, the body intricately enameled throughout in vibrant tones of cobalt blue, with banded registers of contrasting motifs, including the Eight Buddhist Emblems amongst densely scrolling lotus flowers over the belly, a fine band of bats amongst clouds, with a register of rolling waves above, and repeating geometric bands encircling the neck, height 19.4 in — 49.2 cm

Also included in the auction is the exquisite ink and colour on paper, ‘Birds and Flowers’ by Zhao Shao’ang (1905-1998), ink and colour on paper, 20.9 x 37 in — 53 x 94 cm. Zhao Shao'ang has been noted by some critics as the best flower-and-bird painter of his time. Zhao's representations of birds excel not only in their "jewel-like sensuous glitter," as noted by the critic Pierre Rouve, but also in their animated postures.
