Curators in Conversation: Gerald McMaster and Jesse Wente

Join distinguished guest curators Gerald McMaster and Jesse Wente for an enlightening discussion of their respective exhibitions on view at the Ryerson Image Centre, their experience and background in the visual arts, and their curatorial motivations. McMaster is co-curator (with Denise Birkhofer) of The Faraway Nearby: Photographs of Canada from The New York Times Photo Archive. He is Plains Cree and lives and works in Toronto. He is also an artist, author, and Canada Research Chair of Indigenous Visual Culture and Curatorial Practice at OCAD University, Toronto.

Wente is the curator of Zacharias Kunuk: Dog Team, on view on the RIC’s Salah J. Bachir New Media Wall. Wente is Ojibwe and lives and works in Toronto. A broadcaster, public speaker and curator, he has appeared on CBC Radio's Metro Morning as film and pop culture critic for 20 years, and is formerly Director of Film Programmes at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

The Faraway Nearby: Photographs of Canada from The New York Times Photo Archive
Drawing from nearly 25,000 photographs of Canadian subject matter from The New York Times Photo Archive, an extraordinary new promised gift to the collection, this exhibition examines a century of Canada's history and its representation. The Faraway Nearby is generously supported by TD Bank Group and the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund (OCAF) and by media sponsor Toronto Star.
