CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Art & Social Strata
Conference + Artist Projects | Hamilton, Ontario

*** One week left to apply! ***

Proposals due 21 December 2017

Through a conference and artist projects in spring 2018, Art & Social Strata will seek to address the formal, political and ethical dimensions of socially-engaged and critical art practices. The conference will take place in Hamilton, Ontario from March 23-25, 2018, with the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre serving as the primary venue. We aim to consider and address the harsh inequality that exists under our current social order, while exploring more collective and communal forms of learning, living, and practicing in the arts. We seek to critically reflect on the role of the arts in addressing social stratification, and value both practice-based and research-based forms of analysis and understanding.

We are accepting proposals from artists, collectives, researchers, curators and other arts workers to present papers, workshops, and artist projects, as well as participatory or socially-engaged projects that may not fit a conventional conference format.

We are interested in a range of themes that reflect on the social and political dimensions of contemporary arts practices and institutions. These can include but are not limited to:

  • addressing increasingly precarious labour and instability in institutions dependent on project-based funding
  • gentrification and the prohibitive rents faced by artists and organizations
  • barriers to arts education and the ongoing expectation of free labour within the arts
  • systemic inequality and the ongoing tokenization of racialized and marginalized cultural producers
  • hierarchical structures within organizations

We would like to explore ways of working together in a horizontal, respectful, and mutually-beneficial way. It is our hope that this horizontal approach will resonate through the very fabric of the conference itself.

Application Package

Proposals should include a short project description (max. 300 words), brief bio (max. 150 words) and CV; if the proposed project is visual in nature please also include 5-10 images or a link to video work (max. 5 minutes) and an image list contextualizing the support material. Please indicate any technical requirements in your description. Send application packages to: info@artandsocialstrata.com
