MILLE ALIMENTS
Rachael Grice & Rekha Ramachandran

June 22, 2017 – September 19, 2017

The current collaborative installation by Rachael Grice & Rekha Ramachandran, Mille Aliments, is a meditation on food and the labour by which it is produced. This project takes the form of a tapestry, made from slices of fruits and vegetables which have been dehydrated and hand-sewn together. Each row is made up of a different fruit or vegetable, when sewn together recalls imagery of a garden, small farm, or landscape.

Using the same foods we purchase every day at the grocery store and farmer’s market, this tapestry is an homage to the various kinds of labour that go into cultivating the food we consume. The 18th and 19th century agricultural revolution introduced mass production and drastically changed our relationship to food, largely disconnecting consumers from its labour and origins. Although the mainstream conversation is currently engaged with how and where our food is produced, a loss of intimacy between us and our sustenance persists, and the labour used to cultivate our food often remains invisible.

As they work through the slow, repetitive processes of slicing, drying, and sewing together each piece, Grice and Ramachandran attempt to reconnect with the past by engaging with all the tactile, visual, spatial, and olfactory cues of the fruits and vegetables they diligently craft into this spectacular installation you do not want to miss.
