Sales Associate, Momus

Momus, an international online art publication with a significant and growing readership, is hiring a Sales Associate who can help secure and heighten the publication’s revenue base, while expanding its connections and growing its audience. With a global readership of over half a million, a newly initiated podcast, a print edition in production, and established partnerships with international institutions of record, Momus is ready to capitalize on its cultural influence and growing audience, and explore its untapped potential for profit and expansion.

About Momus:

Founded in 2014, Momus quickly became a trusted reference for those wishing to reflect on contemporary art at a slightly slower pace, and with greater focus and integrity, than online platforms typically allow. With a readership of 600,000, Momus regularly publishes some of the most widely-read and laureled art critics writing today, including Aruna D’Souza, Andrew Berardini, Morgan Quaintance, Mitch Speed, Ben Davis, Tausif Noor, Kimberlee Córdova, Catherine G. Wagley, Sheila Heti, Philip Monk, and Saelan Twerdy, among many others. These are risk-takers, art historians, popular voices, and truth-seekers – both emerging and established – who purvey the contemporary moment from a distance while fully ensconced.

Momus’s advancements and recognition have soared in recent months. The publication was shortlisted – twice – for the International Award for Art Criticism in 2016. And in May 2017, Momus evolved its online publishing platform to include a podcast, Momus: The Podcast, for which the pilot episode – and its first season, which rolls out in Fall/Winter 2017-18 – has been syndicated by NTS radio. The publication is currently designing its first print edition, to be published in October 2017, in concert with its partner /Edition Toronto. Other current partners include artnet News, Tate Etc., with another to be announced shortly.

The Role of the Sales Associate

The Sales Associate will be introducing Momus to an international database of galleries and institutions. We have an amazing publication to sell, with a potential client base, internationally, that is still untried. Momus‘s Sales Associate position holds tremendous earning potential, and the possibility for quick expansion in a role that will evolve with its own success.

Job Description

At the onset, the Sales Associate will be responsible for becoming familiar with the publication. They will then review and complement our (still-forming) database and begin pitching.

Tasks include:

  • Reading Momus’s published material to date, and producing a research document for advertising initiatives (ie. Researching which galleries and institutions we’ve covered - directly or relationally – and forming a list of potential clients)
  • Maintaining a steady readership of other online and print publications to eke out potential advertisers for Momus
  • Researching institutions, foundations, and galleries that share common ground with Momus (ie., aesthetic, tone, demographics, ethos, agenda, etc.)
  • Pitching galleries and institutions for advertising

The Sales Associate is someone comfortable with tracking their own hours and working diligently in their own time. Based upon completion of initial tasks, and an establishment of a sales record, more responsibilities can be added, and the commission rate will increase.

Required and Desired Skills

  • Post-secondary education and/or diploma in the arts, media faculties, business, or similar
  • Proactive when it comes to projects and communication within the organization
  • Familiarity with Excel / Google Sheets, and Wordpress
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to complete tasks independently
  • Self-disciplined
  • Must be a self-starter, a creative problem-solver, and interested in the content and very ethos of the publication

Remuneration Structure

This is a part-time position, and commission-based, with evolving incentives to reward sales success. This will be further discussed upon application.
