Opening May 28, 2016, CAFKA.16: What we do together that we can’t do alone, features 14 new projects commissioned by CAFKA. Joining the CAFKA Biennial will be public art projects produced by our festival and curatorial partner Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound, and our curatorial partners Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, University of Waterloo Art Gallery, Idea Exchange Art and Design, Cambridge Sculpture Garden, Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, and Critical Media Lab. During the biennial exhibition Open Ears will produce eleven performances of contemporary music and sound art. And CAFKA will once again be an important part of Downtown Kitchener’s Summer Lights Festival.

Following the opening reception is the CAFKA Artist Party at the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery Community Space and at the CITS Members Lounge featuring DJs: Adeel Khan, Purrpelle, Scarlet Spades and with a special performance by Bjorn Borg Collective. Tickets are $20 and are available at Brown Paper Tickets.

CAFKA has produced ten exhibitions of contemporary art in the public spaces of the Waterloo Region since its creation in 2001. Founded by local artists in the spirit of an artist-run initiative, CAFKA brings original and experimental contemporary art to the community. Together with our partners we create an artistic dialogue between artists in the Region and in the wider world, sharing our energy, passion and excitement for contemporary art with our friends and neighbours here in the Waterloo Region.

An important aspect of CAFKA is our educational program. Between biennials, CAFKA, with its partner Musagetes, produces the Big Ideas in Art and Culture lecture series and extensive video library lecture documentation and artist interviews. And during the biennial CAFKA will host a symposium, organize seven project-based workshops, lead ten school tours and workshops, guide two bike tours, lead public tours in French and in Mandarin, indulge in two beer-soaked art crawls, wake up to two coffee crawls, and organize five CAFKA Family Fun Days at the Kitchener Market.

CAFKA is an organization founded by artists who believe that contemporary art has an important role to play in the life of their community. Their goal was to make contemporary art a living thing here; to exhibit work that had the potential to change the way people saw their surroundings. And non-artists came to share that vision and have helped to make CAFKA bigger and better. It is in this spirit that the CAFKA biennial is made possible each year.

CAFKA is what we do together, that we can’t do alone.
