The Dunlop Art Gallery presents:
Daryl Vocat The Secret of the Midnight Shadow
August 18 to October 25, 2012
Opening Reception and Artist's Talk: Saturday, August 18 at 1:00 pm
The forest has a dual nature, undergoing a transformation each evening. Tranquil during the day, at night it is shadowy, mysterious, sometimes frightening. It is this forest, the site of "horror films, black magic and mythology" that artist Daryl Vocat has created, and populated in his immersive installation, The Secret of the Midnight Shadow.1 Vocat's forest is inhabited with figures suspended in a liminal state: they are illustrations that the artist has lifted from Boy Scout manuals, manipulated, enlarged and redrawn, lifesize, as cutouts that extend from the gallery walls, occupying the same space as the viewer. Liberated from the safe narratives of the instructive texts they spring from, they are thrown into a space of ambiguity.
A nacent sense of self and community develops among the boys, and it is wholly different than could previously be imagined. The boys claim this place as their own, haunting it with their presence. They learn to reconcile past experiences and beliefs with a world opening up to a multitude of potentialities, of ways of being in the world, of being together, of being community. It's a dark place, but also an exciting one – figures shapeshift as new identities are tried on, allegiances and fierce friendships are formed, and the anarchic spirit thrives, protected by the darkness of the night.
