REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS NOTICE

Contract Number: C3-04-12

PROFESSIONAL ARTISTIC SERVICES REQUIRED FOR THE PUBLIC ART COMMISSION AT BATTLEFIELD PARK

Closing 3:00:59 pm, Hamilton time
Thursday September 27, 2012

Sealed Proposals for the above noted Request for Proposals, addressed to the Procurement Manager, City of Hamilton, Procurement Section, Standard Life Building, 120 King Street West, 9th Floor, Suite 900, Hamilton, ON, L8P 4V2 will be received at only the Procurement Section on or before the date and time stated above.

SCOPE OF WORK

Invitation to Artists

The City of Hamilton is honored to extend an invitation to artists with a working knowledge of the historic legacy and cultural traditions of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek communities to make a submission to the Public Art Competition at Battlefield Park either as an individual artist or as part of an artist-led team. This competition provides a unique opportunity for artists to imagine what the legacy of the Battle of Stoney Creek and the War of 1812 mean on their 200th anniversary to both the aboriginal community and citizens of Hamilton and to add a new layer to the already rich history of Battlefield Park.

All proposed work will be judged in part on how successfully it addresses the following theme:

Public art at Battlefield Park will interpret the meanings and outcomes of the Battle of Stoney Creek and the War of 1812 focusing on healing and reconciliation in a way that is meaningful and respectful both to the aboriginal community and the citizens of Hamilton.

The site for the proposed work(s) is in the northwest section of Battlefield Park near the corner of King Street and Centennial Parkway in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada.

This is a 2 stage competition with an honorarium of $2200 for short listed artists and an award of $220,000 for the fabrication and installation of the successful proposal.

Proposals will be evaluated by a volunteer jury according to the competition theme and other criteria and requirements set out in the request for proposals. The Jury is comprised of members of the local community, members of the aboriginal community, artists, arts professionals, and other external advisors where required. City staff is involved as non voting members, and participate in an advisory capacity.

NOTE: The Successful Artist will be required to show proof of Commercial General Liability Insurance coverage in the amount of $2,000,000 and furnish a WSIB Clearance Certificate or letter of exemption from the WSIB prior to commencing work.
