Snjóflóð/Færslur (Avalanche/Records), 2012

The activity of attaching one thing to another is at the core of this project, and the reward is in finding suggestions of real and imagined environments. An avalanche transforms a landscape into a chaotic and abstracted version of a particular place; the records (10 years of shredded bank statements) made into objects contain, encompass, and enclose that chaos.

The trajectory of my art practice has, more often than not, included investigations that respond to current events, my immediate environment, and personal experiences. And while my most recent explorations have been executed with a more intuitive approach to material, a personal landscape and narrative continue to emerge within the work. I have been working primarily with materials that are composed of plastic, various sizes and colours of cable ties, clothing tags, fencing, and found plastic. In this instance, I am moving from plastic to paper, another consumable, ubiquitous and banal material. The projects executed with these materials emerge through attempts to, either gently interfere or augment natural environments and the urban landscape, or via installations within domestic spaces, i.e., a traditional gallery space, empty warehouses, or storefronts. ~ Svava Thordis Juliusson

This project was realized through the generous support of the Ontario Arts council, an agency of the Province of Ontario.

Gallery 4 is an alternative space offered free of charge to local artists. It has been in continuous operation since 1984, making it the second oldest gallery in the James North district (preceded by the Hamilton Artists Inc). We offer a program of small-scale, monthly exhibitions by emerging local artists and also give mid-career artists the opportunity to develop new ideas in a public setting.
