Homer Watson House & Gallery is thrilled to announce a very special exhibition, Bringing Heritage Home, from May 5 - September 30, 2012! Developed as a tribute to our namesake and in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the Bringing Heritage Home exhibit honours the legacy of Homer Ransford Watson (1855-1936), the man who first saw and painted Canada in its true colours. On loan from Windsor Castle's Royal Collection are two historic Homer Watson paintings; The Pioneer Mill and The Last Day of the Drought. This exhibition will also proudly feature paintings from the National Gallery in Ottawa and other prestigious collections across Canada.

Born to a pioneer saw mill owner in the village of Doon, Ontario in 1855 and entirely self-taught, Homer Watson made the sale of his lifetime in 1881. The Pioneer Mill was bought by the Marquis of Lorne, the Governor General of Canada, as a gift for Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Acquired by the Royal Collection in 1882, The Last Day of the Drought would further establish Watson's reputation as an outstanding Canadian landscape artist.

Homer Watson, dubbed by Oscar Wilde "the Canadian Constable" was one of the most important artists in this country at the turn of the last century, and the first to be internationally acclaimed and collected. Focusing on his early period, Bringing Heritage Home is the most comprehensive essay into the work of this celebrated artist.
