Opening Reception: June 22, 8-10pm

This exhibition features eight Toronto artists exploring new approaches to producing artworks whose meaning and essence are revealed through the tactile and factual characteristics of the material from which they are made. Working primarily with recognizable forms such as painting, sculpture, and installation, they combine found, vernacular, and traditional materials with lo-tech, industrial, and handcrafted processes with an astute resourcefulness and informed conceptual strategies. Their inventive actions and processes transform materials into a coherent poetic language of form animating latent expressive potential of matter, awakening within the viewer new ways of seeing and making sense of the world around us. For these artists material and matter is the subject of their work. trans/FORM presents new perspectives on form, meaning, and material, that are essential to the very definition of art. + learn more

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and the National Gallery of Canada.

June 23 - August 12, 2012
Opening Reception: June 22, 8-10pm

Showcasing iconic works from the 1960s to the present, The Shape of Things examines the translation of form from one state to another while tracing a shifting attitude toward a more engaged viewing experience. In this exhibition, a dynamic tension is created between pieces by Joseph Albers, Ron Martin, Luanne Martineau, Elizabeth McIntosh, Claude Tousignant and Richard Tuttle as notions of pure geometry and colour are materialized and then deconstructed in hybrid works that inhabit the gallery. Paintings sensuously slouch and stretch as though reaching to the ground; canvases ardently cling to the walls while sculptural forms assert their presence as they occupy the architectural space. The shape of these things is at once obvious and obscure as here it is our attuned encounter with each work that determines meaning + learn more

STREET VIEW and The Shape of Things are presented as part of the three year National Gallery of Canada at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art program that will see the two institutions co-organize and co-present a series of exclusive exhibitions in MOCCA's newly-renovated project space, drawn from the NGC's extensive contemporary art collection. These will include the presentation of single works, new acquisitions or full-scale exhibitions designed to complement MOCCA's existing programming. The National Gallery of Canada at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is generously supported by AXA Art Canada, Cineplex Media, World MasterCard®, and The Ouellette Family Foundation. The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is grateful for the patronage of THE ART DEPT., a leadership circle of MOCCA patrons.

All programs and activities at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art are supported by Toronto Culture, the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, BMO Financial Group, Cisco Canada, individual memberships, and private donations.
