Journal intime d'un quartier / Diary of a Neighbourhood utilizes a series of apartment fronts, notably the windows, to 'publish' a self-penned literary work. It is a community-based initiative, implicating the residents of one street in one Montréal neighbourhood. Envisioned as a trans-disciplinary project, Journal intime d'un quartier / Diary of a Neighbourhood encompasses public art, print art, installation, street theatre and performance but remains, in essence, a literary work.

Journal intime d'un quartier / Diary of a Neighbourhood is designed to appear as if an entire neighbourhood arose one morning compelled to express, by writing in their windows, their most heart-felled convictions - a fictional privacy made public, a vehicle for opinion, confession, disclosure, and revelation. The texts have been written to reflect difference and to lay bare a multitude of voices - in effect, a neighbourhood consisting of a diversity of residents (gender, race, social class and generations). The overall texts are a mix of observations, opinions, slogans, confessions, poetic and political musings, facts, viewpoints, disclosures and perceptions the bulk of which have been written by Michael Toppings. Dispersed throughout these fictitious texts are quotations from a large pool of disparate sources - David Wojnarowicz, Hart Crane, WU LYF, Nietzche, Jeanette Winterson to name a few. Texts will be predominantly in French with certain sections in English, Spanish, Arab, Chinese and in Braille.

This production includes a series of interventions (Neighbo0urhood Watch) realized over a 7-day period that take place on the sidewalks, balconies, front porches and the stairwells of each participating building. Performers include Gordon Allen, Mathieu Caron, Marc Gagnon, Sophia Gaspard, Pierre Gauvin, Heather Mah, Zohar Melinek, Jean-Denis Olharan, Caroline Pelletier, Moheb Soliman, Mireille Tawfik, and Mary Williamson. These interventions, with titles that include Lost, Vente de vie, Aut disce aut discede, 'My head is an animal', Crieur public, and Man with hose, are designed as both lion and lamb, voluble and still, either overtaking a neighbourhood like a running of bulls or slipping in on tiptoe, barely discernible. With the actual neighbourhood as stage, performers infiltrate by assuming the role of resident, rendering portrayals of the everyday and the banal alongside deconstructions and gender inversions of film and theatre classics such as Network and A Streetcar Named Desire. Stealthy, unsanctioned, blithe and unassuming!

About the artist : Michael Toppings is a text-based, language artist born and raised in Québec though having lived nearly half of his life elsewhere. Since 1988, he has created a body of work that attempts to amend the reading experience - to coerce the role of the reader into that of viewer, of listener and of active participant. His art practice is also, therefore, about blurring a line between publishing and exhibiting. Le projet : Journal intime d'un quartier / Diary of a Neighbourhood utilise une série de devantures d'appartements, notamment des fenêtres, pour « publier » une œuvre littéraire auto-écrite. Il s'agit d'une initiative communautaire impliquant les habitants d'une rue d'un quartier de Montréal (Jeanne-Mance, entre Prince-Arthur et avenue des Pins). Ce projet veut donner l'impression que les habitants de tout un quartier se mobilisent pour exprimer leurs pensées par écrit au travers de leurs fenêtres - une vie privée fictive rendue publique, un véhicule pour l'avis, la confession, la divulgation et la rêverie.

Envisagé comme projet transdisciplinaire et conçu pour transformer une rue en toile littéraire géante, Journal intime d'un quartier englobe l'art public, l'art imprimé, l'installation, le théâtre de rue et la performance, mais demeure, par son essence, une œuvre littéraire.

Les textes ont été écrits pour refléter la différence et mettre à nu une multitude de voix - en réalité, un voisinage constitué par une diversité des résidents (en terme de genre, de race, de classe sociale et de génération et âges divers). Les textes sont pour l'essentiel un mélange d'observations, d'opinions, de slogans, de confessions, de réflexions poétiques et politiques, de faits, de points de vue, de révélations et de perceptions. La plus grande partie a été composée par Michael Toppings. Cependant sont dispersées partout au milieu de ces textes fictionnels des citations tirées d'un large bassin de sources disparates — comme David Wojnarowicz, Hart Crane, WU LYF, Nietzche, Jeanette Winterson pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns. Les textes seront principalement en français avec certaines sections en anglais, espagnol, arabe, chinois et en braille.

La production comprend une série de performances réalisées sur une période de sept jours (Veillées de quartier) qui ont lieu sur les trottoirs, les balcons, les terrasses et les escaliers de chaque immeuble participant. Les interprètes incluent Gordon Allen, Mathieu Caron, Marc Gagnon, Sophia Gaspard, Pierre Gauvin, Heather Mah, Zohar Melinek, Jean-Denis Olharan, Caroline Pelletier, Moheb Soliman, Mireille Tawfik, et Mary Williamson. Ces interventions, incluant les titres tels Lost, Vente de vie, Aut disce aut discede, My head is an animal, Crieur public, et Man with hose, présentent des tableaux sonores ou tout en subtilité, emportant tout un quartier entier comme dans une course sauvage de taureaux ou dans une discrète fuite en avant sur la pointe des pieds. Avec un véritable voisinage qui se constitue en réelle scène, les interprètes s'y infiltrent en endossant le rôle de résidents et transforment ainsi les représentations du quotidien et du banal; ils nous accompagnent aussi dans des déconstructions et des inversions de scènes de films et théâtre classiques comme Network et un Tramway Nommé Désir. À contre courant et sans prétention, furtif et cocasse!

L'artiste : Michael Toppings est un artiste des mots et de la langue qui est né et a grandi au Québec, bien qu'il est vécu près de la moitié de sa vie ailleurs. Depuis 1988, il a créé des œuvres qui tentent de modifier l'expérience de la lecture afin de contraindre le rôle du lecteur à celui de spectateur, d'auditeur et de participant actif. Sa pratique artistique consiste aussi, par conséquent, à estomper les frontières entre la publication et l'exposition.
