Lise Beaudry: Sur la glace | Standing on Ice

A Featured Exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival (scotiabankcontactphoto.com)

Sur la glace / Walking on Ice is part of Lise Beaudry's ongoing investigation into the culture of the Ontario north. Returning to the Franco-Ontarian lake community where she grew up, Beaudry documents a landscape she knows personally. Her photographic series of monochromatic studies, WhiteScapes (2010), create an abstract portrait of the temporal states of ice and snow. Shot under grey cloud cover, the artist carefully considers the angle of view, aperture, exposure, and printing process to create images that attempt to expose the limits of the photograph. The artist says, "They appear to be of almost nothing." Suggesting the experience of walking to the centre of a frozen lake, these photos point to a spiritual subtext–implying a rite of sacred navigation.

Beaudry's video projection, Zone (2011), uses an underwater camera to capture the grey-tone beauty of water moving beneath the cover of snow and ice. The work's audio component, made in collaboration with media artist and composer Michelle Irving, was produced by submerging microphones under the frozen lake. Zone's muffled bass and the echo of sound, experienced with headphones, provide an ambient soundtrack for the viewing of quiet and minimal images.

A catalogue has been produced by the AGM, with critical text by Gaëlle Morel, Exhibitions Curator, RYERSON IMAGE CENTRE, Ryerson University, Toronto and Stuart Keeler, Curator & Director of Programmes at the ART GALLERY OF MISSISSAUGA. The catalogue is designed by Rob Gray of Laser Reproduction.

Free Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival 2012 catalogues are available at the AGM.

Morris Lum: New Cultural Topographics

Inaugural Exhibition of XIT-RM Project Space

The Art Gallery of Mississauga is pleased to announce the launch of XIT-RM Project Space! The XIT-RM will showcase emerging and established artists in the Greater Toronto Area and the Mississauga region. The emphasis is on contemporary art and critical engagement. Four to six artists are presented annually with a published catalogue and accompanying critical text. Exhibitions honour the Mission and Mandate of the AGM and are selected by the Curator. All the XIT-RM exhibitions will have programming related to the education components of the AGM Resource Room and the new Artist Development Series.

XIT-RM Project Space opens on May 10th 6 pm with Morris Lum: New Cultural Topographics. Mississauga-based Lum is an urban/suburban geographer. The inaugural artist for the XIT-RM, Lum presents five photographic works that document the plaza spaces of New Canadian Chinese communities located in the edge cities of Ontario. Within his new body of work, night-time abandoned spaces become symbols of the impersonality of super-modernity. Lum presents these spaces as places where the human figure is void and the automobile is the phantom harbinger of an imposing new day. He captures the physical space of the strip mall, the parking lot, and other marginal places, highlighting social isolation and unease.
