Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival
May 2012

CONTACT is the world's largest annual photography festival. The 2012 edition features 6 Primary Exhibitions; 10 Public Installations; 32 Featured Exhibitions, and 134 Open Exhibitions showcasing over 1,000 artists throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

This year's festival investigates the theme of "Public" in a multi-venue series of exhibitions, site-specific installations, lectures and events across the city. CONTACT 2012 looks at the social and political issues that are shaped by our experience of publicness. From street photography to images found on the Internet, photo-conceptual projects to conflict photojournalism, the work's presented challenge distinctions between private and public. The photographs we see are always by definition public and, arguably, more than ever before photography is the tool we use to define our public selves. Through a focus on this theme, Festival presentations highlight the role photography plays in the creation of collective experience.
