MYLARchitecture:

a Yukon SOVA student project in collaboration with Ed Pien

ARTS UNDERGROUND

March 8th - 31st 2012

Reception March 8th 5 - 7 pm 15-305 Main Street Whitehorse, YUKON

During a recent residency with the Yukon School of Visual Arts in Dawson City, internationally acclaimed guest Artist Ed Pien worked closely with students in Veronica Verkley's 2D studio to create a magical, immersive installation on view at Arts Underground in Whitehorse march 8-31st , 2012.

The challenge Ed gave the students was to develop 'interconnected habitats for imagined creatures' using only mylar, video projection, light & shadow; resulting in a kind of fantastical crystalline architecture, floating in space, formed solely from transparent materials. A collaborative project, the students' works connect and interlace to create a singular event.

SOVA students not only designed & developed the work itself; they also gained valuable experience by participating hands-on in the myriad tiny steps involved in mounting a show in a professional gallery.

Several SOVA students will make the voyage south from Dawson to install the show, and to attend Thursday's opening of MYLARchitecture, which coincides with the opening of 'Exquisite North', an Arctic Winter Games special project put on by Arts Underground, and Mcbride Museum's Sports Yukon exhibition.
