Michael Stoeber: "My method of painting for my recent hard-edge abstractions is a type of process painting, where I introduce spontaneous shapes, lines, and colours abstracted from real-world objects or from my imagination. Once I establish the basis, I seek to resolve the tension or complexity of the shapes and colours by continuously reworking the picture. Overall, this work is a tangible by-product of my long-standing interest in spirituality. The process allows subconscious energies and feelings to surface in creative and spiritually integrative ways. These impressions have constellated around some major themes of spirituality: "Infants and Children" is a series that images the mysterious wonder and playfulness of youth; "Yoga and Prayer" explores some of the dynamics of these spiritual practices; "Reflections of the Feminine" highlights impressions of feminine qualities and energies; and "Sacred Animals" explores the mystery and healing magic of animal figures and other elements of nature."
About the artist:
Born in Calgary, Michael Stoeber studied philosophy of religion at the University of Calgary and the University of Toronto, focusing on the nature of comparative religious experience. He taught in this area for a number of years in Washington, D.C., and is now a professor of spirituality at Regis College, University of Toronto. Since 2007, he has taken painting and printmaking classes at the Toronto School of Art. Prior to that time, he had been working primarily with abstract ink sketching, as a self-taught artist. Currently he is exploring themes of spirituality in his painting and sketching.
