Annie Pootoogook: Kinngait Compositions
Jan Allen
80 pp 52 col. ill.
978-1-55339-260-6
$26.00

Featuring drawings spanning 2001 to 2006, this publication focuses on Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, the isolated northern community that has been the focus of Annie Pootoogook's practice. Her drawings offer an unflinching look at life in a community in transition, and bear witness to the bonds among its people. In the context of the broad popular appeal of Inuit graphics, these works are distinguished by a cool observational quality, wit and charged understatement that have drawn intense critical interest to her work. She is the granddaughter of the renowned graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona and daughter of artist Napachie Pootoogook. She received the prestigious Sobey Art Award in 2006. Her drawings have been exhibited at Documenta 12, the Power Plant (Toronto) and the National Museum of the American Indian (New York). Curator Jan Allen's essay offers a fresh analysis of the aesthetic and social dimensions of Pootoogook's art, and of the ways in which her meteoric rise to international success has opened new avenues for engagement and expression by the emerging generation of Inuit artists.

Vera Frenkel's String Games
Jan Allen and Earl Miller
24 pp 12 bw ill.
978-1-55339-259-0
$12.00

This publication features a two-part introduction to Frenkel's pioneering work String Games. Jan Allen's essay "Prototyping Telepresence" offers a brief account of the work's creation and central impulses. Earl Miller's "Information Remote" situates String Games within the national and international context of conceptual art practices, where it intersects with the nascent electronic art movement.
