Cross my Heart
An exhibition of Caroline Larsen’s basket weaved paintings.
March 28th – April 25th 2011
Jane Bond, 005 Princess Street West, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 2X7
Opening Reception: Thursday March 31st 6pm at the Jane Bond
Caroline Larsen and the Jane Bond are pleased to announce Cross My Heart an exhibition featuring the woven work of Caroline Larsen.
Caroline Larsen’s work explores the perception of space, paint, and surface texture. In this body of work she creates paintings with a decorating piping bag. Using this technique she is able to generate ribbons of paint that lace up and over themselves upon the canvas. This method creates an optical illusion leaving the viewer to speculate how the works were constructed and draws them directly into the painting. These paintings challenge the perception of the flat painted surface as the paint protrudes considerably from the canvas. The use of a bag to apply paint directly manipulates the terrain of the painted canvas. These paintings ask the question - what defines a painting? Is it brush on canvas, splatter, drip and pour? The abstract paintings are in essence abstract as they do not represent a particular image, but they have representational qualities as they do evoke a thick stitch, knitted fabric, patio furniture and straw baskets. The imagery in the work is inspired from pop culture and traditional Canadian landscape painting.
Caroline Larsen is a Toronto based artist who graduated with honours from the University of Waterloo. Larsen’s other bodies of works include artist multiples, large figurative painting and wall sculpture.
