Graduate Residency in Florence

Who is eligible?
The program is open to any graduate student currently enrolled at a Canadian university, as well as OCADU graduate and senior undergraduate students.

The Program:

The Interdisciplinary Master's in Art, Media & Design Summer Graduate Residency in Florence is an opportunity for graduate students and upper level OCADU undergraduate students to develop or continue a body of research or studio work in a communal studio setting in Florence. The Graduate Residency will be directed by an OCAD University Professor who will act as the Residency Director. Successful participation will be graded for a total of 3 credits by the Residency Director.

Background:

The OCAD University Florence Campus was established in 1974. Since then, the Program in Florence has annually provided a rich and challenging cultural experience for students, faculty, visiting Artists and Designers. This European campus offers a facilitated, self-directed study approach to learning. While in residence in Florence, students develop, continue or extend a body of research, studio and/or scholarly work, in a communal studio setting. Art history seminars and field trips will be taught and led by Dr. Peter Porçal, our resident scholar and expert on Italian art history in Florence, amidst a backdrop of architectural and artistic treasures from the Italian Renaissance.

Fees:

  • External applicants: $1400 Program and Studio Fee
  • Current OCADU Senior Undergraduate Students: Pay a $600 Program and Studio Fee
  • Current OCADU Graduate Students: No Fees apply
  • All additional costs are the responsibility of the applicant (flight, accommodation, etc.)

 

How to Apply:

  • Complete and submit an application (download the PDF) with the proposal requirements listed below, no later than Friday, February 18, 2011
  • A concise description of your plan of study (maximum 250 words), including a statement of relevance to clarify how the Florence Summer Residency fits into your larger program of study. This should also include: research objectives, methodologies, and expected outcomes;
  • A portfolio with a maximum 6 JPG or TIFF format images, and/or 2 time-based works on a CD/DVD, with a list of works submitted;
  • A letter of reference from a current faculty member or supervisor;
  • An in-person interview with the Residency Director, at a time to be determined.

 

Florence Orientation Night:

Thursday, January 13, 2011, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

OCAD University, Graduate Gallery, 205 Richmond Street West, Ground Floor, Toronto

This will be an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about logistics for the residency. Attendance is required for all participants.
