ANNE-MARIE COSGROVE
15 YEARS OF PAINTING: A PERSPECTIVE

April 14 to April 25

Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts
984 Queen West, Toronto, Ontario Canada M6J 1H1
416 504 7142

This exhibition highlights the artist’s personal and social engagement with painting for over two decades.  Several of the selected works are on exhibit for the first time.

“We need to know where we have been: to know where we are going”
(Jennifer Delos Reyes, Canadian social art theorist).  This statement fuels much of the purpose and context for this retrospective at this moment in the artist’s career.  With so much media emphasis on the ‘new’, this exhibition self-consciously provides a perspective from which to view her current work today.

“Drawing on personal and specific conditions of existence in which I find myself, these paintings refer to modern pop culture within a romantic and formalist approach to painting. These are experiments in painting; manifestations of grapplings between the conscious (ego and desire) and the unconscious or the meditative (serendipity and chance). The act and process of painting become part of the intention of the work.  The result, a poetic and unexpected transformation of the idea.” -Anne-Marie Cosgrove

Anne-Marie Cosgrove holds a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal and an MFA from York University in Toronto.  Her work was recently exhibited at the Toronto Artist Project and at the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) 2009 Annual in Seattle, Washington (USA).   She has exhibited her paintings in solo and group exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington, DC and has received a number of awards from the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council.  Her work is represented in private and corporate collections in both Canada and the US including York University and the Clarica Corporation and at www.anne-mariecosgrove.com .
