Curator, Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba

Term: Full-time, Permanent
Compensation: $41,000/annum plus benefits

Position available

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is seeking a dynamic, critically-minded, and empathic, individual to serve as our Curator. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Curator is responsible for developing and producing contemporary art exhibitions and related publications, and working collaboratively with other staff to provide innovative public programs and effective communications strategies.

The successful candidate will be charged with approaching our exhibitions and events with a spirit of radical experimentation. Experimentation that honours our current strengths and offers opportunities to strive towards innovative new understandings of art and our cultural environment. They will be asked to actively engage community groups and members through reciprocal exchange, with the purpose of developing and maintaining long-term relationships.


Our organization

We are the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, a community engaged and inclusive contemporary art gallery located in downtown Brandon, Manitoba. Serving the broad and diverse population of Southwestern Manitoba, the AGSM is Manitoba’s largest arts organization outside of Winnipeg. We have a national reputation for the excellence of our culturally diverse exhibition and education programming. We believe art is an essential element of what defines community, culture, and nation. As such, we are committed to the artists and deep art history of this land as we collectively work towards the betterment of our shared community, and towards rebuilding and strengthen relationships between Indigenous communities and the many diverse peoples who now make up Southwestern Manitoba. The AGSM is a leading advocate for cultural development, the revitalization of downtown Brandon, and the creative economy in the region. Our 22,000 square foot facility attracts more than 22,000 people per year and nearly 3,000 children and adults take part in over 250 onsite public programming activities.

Duties include

  • Working alongside the Executive Director and the Board to shape the artistic vision of the AGSM
  • Create a multi-year exhibition plan that balances leading national/international trends with issues relevant to local communities; which includes representation from artists both in the region and beyond
  • Coordinating and managing approximately 6 - 8 Main Gallery exhibitions per year and approximately 10 Community Gallery exhibitions (with guidance from the Executive Director)
  • Curating at least one major exhibition per year
  • Undertake exhibitions research
  • Oversee the production of all exhibitions related materials, including brochures for each Main Gallery exhibition.
  • Seeking and applying for project specific funding for exhibitions and programs
  • Assisting Executive Director with operating grant applications
  • Coordinate adjunct programming and events alongside the Art Educator
  • Create and actively disseminate promotional material related to exhibitions and events
  • Work with the Facility Manager to ensure proper care, maintenance, conservation, and management of the AGSM’s Collection.
  • Actively engaging relevant community groups and members of the regional arts milieu
  • Assists the Facility Manager to insure that all public exhibitions are professionally mounted; works of art are registered, prepared, and maintained; conservation responsibilities are handled and related administrative/record keeping responsibilities are undertaken.


Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in a relevant discipline (including Art History, Visual Studies, Curatorial Studies, etc.)
  • A minimum of two years of professional curatorial experience
  • An active and demonstrable interest in and knowledge of contemporary art, community-based curatorial practices, Indigenous art, and the dynamics of prairie arts communities
  • Strong project management, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • An eagerness to learn and innovate
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Working knowledge of art handling procedures for two and three dimensional objects; mounting and hanging artworks
  • Excellent organizational skills, time-management skills and orientation to detail
  • General computer literacy with ability to work in digital environments including G-Suite (Google Docs, Drive, and Calendar)
