The McMichael Canadian Art Collection stands alone as the only public fine art gallery in the nation that focuses on Canadian art and the Indigenous art of our country, both historical and contemporary. The McMichael’s permanent collection consists of over 6,500 artworks by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, and First Nations, Métis, Inuit and contemporary artists who have contributed to the development of Canadian art.

The McMichael is also the gallery of record for works on paper from the Inuit community of Cape Dorset, as we are the custodians for the Cape Dorset archive, totaling more than 100,000 artworks. The three floors of gallery, exhibition, studios and program space, as well as library and archives and conservation laboratory, are surrounded by 100 acres of conservation land, including outdoor sculpture installations. The gallery welcomes on average more than 115,000 visitors annually. As a public institution, the McMichael is committed to delivering exceptional visitor experience throughout our campus grounds and facilities.

Reporting to the Chief Curator, the Head, Exhibitions & Publications is responsible for the coordination of the McMichael exhibition program, the project management of exhibitions and the administration of touring exhibitions, and related direction and oversight of branded publications for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Scope of responsibility includes overseeing exhibitions and publications staff and ensuring the accuracy and availability of exhibition calendars.

The Head, Exhibitions & Publications works with the Chief Curator and Executive Director to develop a multi-year exhibition program and is responsible for liaising with curators, artists, designers, authors and suppliers and internal staff to ensure the successful and timely planning, production and execution of all McMichael exhibitions and publications. Working with other art institutions, this position will create and negotiate McMichael exhibition-related contracts, and work with internal colleagues to develop installation and shipping schedules. The position will oversee the coordination of the content and design processes of publications carried out by the Image Asset and Publications Coordinator and ensure a publications strategy and budget forecast are in place. As a public agency, the requirement to produce and manage request for quotes and proposals relating to exhibition or publication projects is required

The successful candidate will have 7+ years experience in exhibition organization and coordination within a public gallery or museum. A degree in Fine Arts, Curatorial or Museum Studies; and a working knowledge of standard museum policies, practices and exhibition standards as regards exhibition organization is required. Management experience and team work is required. Excellent customer service, written and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail is required. A familiarity with Canadian art history, use of The Museum System (TMS) database, and knowledge of French are all assets.
