There are no words for lost days, oil and acrylic on canvas, 48 x 60"

The Roundhouse Gallery at Steam Whistle Brewing presents SOJOURN, a solo exhibition of recent work by Sarah Carlson.

The show will run July 5 – 29, 2017
Opening reception: July 5, 7:00 to 10:00pm.

The paintings in Sarah Carlson’s SOJOURN are a pictorial mix of figuration and abstraction inspired by recent travels within Canadian wild spaces. Completing artist residencies in both Algonquin Provincial Park and the remote Yukon wilderness in 2016, Carlson responds to her surroundings by embodying the idea of the nomad or visitor. Along with recurring motifs around migration and movement, the primary theme is an examination of the complex and mediated relationships between humans and nature.

Carlson combines personal experiences with culled images from adventure tourism archives and Canadian art history. Familiar narratives within the landscape painting genre are interpreted with experimentation; featuring vibrant colours, thick oil impasto, luminous acrylic tones, fluid strokes and rendered forms. Throughout the exhibition, Carlson meditates on connections between physical and introspective journeying, presence and transience

Sarah Carlson, b. 1987, Bitburg Germany, is a Canadian artist working mainly in paint and installation practices. She earned her honours BFA (2009) from the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University. Carlson has been featured in Idea Couture's MISC Magazine, interviewed by Feminist Art Conference Toronto and reviewed by Artoronto. She was the spring 2016 artist in residence at Algonquin Provincial Park and has attended residencies at Artscape Gibraltar Point, Can Serrat International Art Centre in Barcelona Spain, and The Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency in Yukon. Carlson will be pursuing her MFA at OCAD University in Fall 2017.
